Creating luxury packaging on through-dyed papers like Gmund means working with a "living" material—one with a strong personality that actively interacts with the ink. This makes standard Pantone guides a starting reference, but never the final destination.

Embellishment and Form: The Tactile Value of Hot Stamping and Die-Cutting

For the Dolomia project, the choice to embellish the cartons with hot stamping introduced a specific technical hurdle: managing the contrast between the rough surface of the Gmund paper and the brilliance of metallic foils.
Applying embellishments to structured natural papers requires millimetric calibration. Excessive pressure risks "crushing" the board's texture, flattening its material prestige; insufficient pressure, conversely, would fail to ensure perfect foil adhesion. Thanks to our experience in specialty processing, we achieved a sharp, brilliant deposit that pops against the matte background without altering the texture—creating a play of light essential for high-profile cosmetic packaging.
Precision die-cutting completes the work. The complex geometric shapes required rigorous structural study. We didn't stop at cutting: we verified the crease strength on a fibrous, rigid material, eliminating the risk of cracking on sharp corners. The result is a solid, functional product where technical excellence transforms a box into a three-dimensional design object, perfectly aligned with the sustainable approach requested by the client.
Line Uniformity: Industrial Management of Format Variants
Creating a single perfect prototype is a stylistic exercise; ensuring consistent quality across an entire secondary packaging line—composed of different formats and volumes—is an industrial offset printing challenge. When cartons of different sizes (from small serum containers to large gift sets) are displayed side-by-side on a shelf, even a minimal variation in Delta E (color deviation) is perceived as a quality defect.
The critical issue for the Dolomia project lay in managing ink zones (ink fountains): large-surface cartons absorb more pigment than smaller formats. If not correctly balanced during the imposition phase, this consumption disparity can cause "ghosting" or unwanted tonal shifts across the sheet.
To prevent this risk, we optimized the print layout based not only on paper yield but on ink flow stability. Our monitoring wasn't merely visual; it was supported by continuous densitometric and spectrophotometric readings throughout the entire run. This instrumental tracking allowed us to maintain constant density values from the first sheet to the last, ensuring every SKU fits into the Dolomia "family" with absolute brand consistency.
